2.) Carlsbad Caverns National Park – For those who really like to rough it up, there are no developed campgrounds in Carlsbad. Backcountry camping is allowed though, and permits can be obtained at the visitor center. Prickly pear, agave, chollas, and sotols abound as you pass through the Chihuahuan Desert and Guadalupe Mountains. The park contains 113 of these caves (from 300 known caves), which are among the largest caves in North America.
Camper’s Review: “I needed more time! This place is huge, and amazing. They request that people stay quiet to maintain the cave atmosphere and it worked. This is by far the largest cavern I have ever been in. We took the elevator down as we didn’t have time for the natural entrance hike in and even so we spent a couple hours just walking around the main cavern. “
3.) Pecos National Historical Park – Over 12,000 years of history is what you will experience here in Pecos. If you go during the summer, be sure to check out the “living history” program which features actual demonstrations by native craftsmen.
Camper’s Review: “It was neat to see a full Kiva (albeit reconstructed), and be able to go inside. Up until this point, the only Kivas I’ve seen have been ruins so it was unclear to me what they really looked like. One thing I especially enjoyed was that the temperature inside was a lot cooler than up in the open sun.”
