Northern New Mexico: The Perfect Camping Escape

Northern New Mexico has a wide array of camping accommodations—from primitive campsites to ones that are full-service facilities, that is, there are showers and electrical hook-ups for RVs, thus leading to a more comfortable camping experience. Camping fees start from $5 to approximately $15 per person a night. Although camping can be done all year round, summer is naturally the most popular tourist season here. For the most part, the campsites in this region are well taken care of and are deemed safe.

Although any mention of camping in Northern New Mexico immediately conjures images of trekking through a desert, there are countless opportunities to engage in water-related outdoor activities here. In some places, just setting up beach tents and a few camping equipments are enough for fun weekend getaway. Choosing to take a trip here will bring you to lots of camp sites that are beside or just a short walk away from a beach, lake, a creek, a river, even a gorge!

A good camping destination in Northern New Mexico is the Navajo Lake State Park, which is New Mexico’s second biggest lake with over 15,000 surface acres. The best developed area along Nawajo Lake is Pine River. Aside from the well-maintained campgrounds, the site features a visitor center, a day-use area, even a full-service marina. Across the lake is Sims Mesa, which offers the same amenities as Pine River.

In New Mexico’s northern mountains, you can try visiting El Vado Lake State Park. Just 17 miles southwest of Tierra Amarilla via NM 112, El Vado Lake State Park offers water-skiing, fishing, and boating activities during the summer. There are several coves around the lake where a fishing enthusiast can catch kokanee salmon and trout, or where you can simply relax and meditate if you so wish. Setting up camp near the water, be it white sand beaches or rocky lake ones, does not mean having to do any physical activity though. You can simply grab a towel and relax by the water’s edge, read a good book, or take a nap under a shelter. When you wake up, take a quick invigorating dip in the water.

Now, staying at the beach can get extremely hot especially if you do not have any type of shelter to protect you from the sun’s rays. It is thus very important you bring your own tent. Don’t’ just bring any kind though, as camping tents come in a variety of styles and designs that are ideal only depending on where and when you intend to use them. During the summer and at the beach, beach tents are perfect because they are designed specifically for taking to the beach and providing shade on a sizzling summer day. If you are on a family camping trip and have little kids with you, beach tents are a good thing to have as part of your camping equipment because you can prevent the kids getting sunstroke by setting up a tent where they can get away from the damaging rays of the sun. Beach tents are also useful for keeping your equipment and other supplies in the shade, such as the cooler you brought to keep food and drinks chilled.
