Camping at a Budget in New Mexico

Having great camping experience is not impossible even with a limited budget. This is especially true in New Mexico, “The Land of Enchantment.” The highly diverse geographical features and culture of this state, and the history that permeate every facet of its existence ensure that you are never at a loss of things to do, see, taste, and experience. New Mexico is the place to be if you want a great camping vacation but are held back by the idea that you “can’t afford it.”

You will be amazed with all the free camping opportunities out in New Mexico, and they are not even difficult to learn about. You don’t have to added research though, as a few of them are listed here already. Include them in your itinerary and enjoy yourself without breaking the bank!

Bass fishing, canoeing, fly fishing, hiking, hunting, mountain biking, skiing, whitewater rafting—these are just some of the outdoor stuff you can do when you go camping in New Mexico. Whether you are alone or with a group, activities that allow you to enjoy the great outdoors need not be expensive. As long as you have your camping supplies with you, and camping tents that can fit everyone comfortably come nighttime, you can travel from one place to another and partake of what the area has to offer. Set your camping tents up at least a quarter mile away from shores, trails, or roads and then begin your exploration from that point.

Day hiking is free in several areas, though if you have a vehicle, you will have to pay a minimal fee for entry. Backcountry hiking and camping are mainly free, though permits need to be obtained.

Along the way, cherish the beauty that unfolds before you. Magnificent mountain landscapes, pristine mountain streams, amazing rock formations, glimpses of animals that survive in the land that has sustained their species for centuries (or longer), take a snapshot with a camera or just with your eyes and mind. Appreciate the priceless beauty before you.

If you love to camp and bike, join the annual Sante Fe Trail Bicycle Trek, which is now in its 16th year. Using just paved public roads, get the chance to travel all or part of the famed Sante Fe Trail, about 1100 miles in total. Joining the trek, though, does not mean you won’t have the freedom to explore on your own. Four days after the trek starts, you can break away from the pack at any time. You are not required to ride the entire trek with the group. Camping gear like camping tents and sleeping bags, etc. will be carried by truck. No need to worry about breaking out your cooking tools from your camping gear when eating time comes because all meals will be served in any one of the schools, universities along the route.

Expect to pay $42 per day, which may be quite pricey for some but this already includes daily ride sheets and maps, breakfast and dinner, access to camp sites and showers, and, of course, your camping gear hauled by truck. The trek starts on September 5, 2010, and slots are very limited, so make sure to get a spot in this unique camping experience as early as possible.
